Save Our St Helier Petition

Last year, Tom Brake MP said that he would hand in the latest St Helier Hospital petition when it would have the most impact.

The South West London Clinical Commissioning Groups (CCG) published a five year strategy in 2014 and an Issues paper in 2015 which seek to address the clinical and financial challenges facing the local NHS. The next step is to agree the detail of how the strategy will be implemented, including the role of each local Hospital and Community provider trust in delivering it. This process is underway and so now, when there is still time for them to take people’s views into account ,is the most appropriate time for the CCG to know the strength of feeling in support of the St Helier Hospital’s A+E and maternity services.

So on Friday 8th January, local Councillor Jean Crossby and Tom Brake MP presented the 25,000 strong petition to Brendan Hudson, Chair of the Sutton CCG.

Even though the petition has been handed in, the campaign won’t be over until the A+E and maternity services are secure.  You can still help the campaign.  Sign up to volunteer here or donate here.

I, the undersigned, call on South London CCGs to keep open St Helier Hospital's A&E department, Maternity ward and Children’s ward. To also develop a plan which has local support, is based on solid evidence and provides desperately needed services in the community.

As a family we have used A&E at St Helier quite often. Its close and easy to use with excellent service. St George’s is too far. My husband had an operation and the aftercare was via A&E (which is awful in itself) and we had to use it, and St Helier couldn’t have done better.

It is a disgrace that even the thought of closing St Helier Hospital, has crossed anybody’s mind. A place that has been there for years through good and bad for people. Doctors and Nurses helping people in their time of need in all aspects of life’s health issues – good and bad etc. This must STOP and KEEP THE HOSPITAL running and the hospital that we all know. All to do with money saving all the time, what about saving patients, helping them – young and old. They should be paying for more nurses, cleaners on wards, get volunteers on-board teach them what needs to be done, so then they will be able to gain more experience that they may require, especially the young. Spend money and refurbish the hospital and make it a better one for all and to ensure that people are not afraid of coming and being looked at or catching any form of infection etc. There are a lot of people out of work that have the merits, degrees and capabilities of doing the jobs that they are accustomed to.

Because our next hospital is to far away and with the amount of traffic it could be fatal.

St Helier is an essential service for people around Sutton. With the nearest A&E departments miles away, it’s worrying that more emergency situations could turn fatal in the time it takes to get someone to another hospital. We need more A&E departments not fewer. Government should chase tax dodgers and clamp down on corporate tax evasion rather than close down important public services.

St Helier hospital is the bedrock of the changing demographics of Sutton and the surrounding area. Its now among the best places in Greater London for educated professionals with young families. The assurance of having an efficient local hospital and A&E is enormous and the ever growing demand of families looking to move into the area is testimony to this. Any attempts to cut down/ close services at St Helier would ruin the vibrant growth that this area has enjoyed over the past 5 years.
